Start with the sound

Popping, hissing, and tiny steam defects during extrusion are stronger moisture signals than stringing alone. Stringing can come from retraction, temperature, travel behavior, or wet filament. The sound narrows the suspect list before you spend money.

Print a small control piece

Use the same filament, nozzle, and slicer profile. Print one small temperature tower or stringing test before drying, then dry the spool and repeat without touching slicer settings. If the defect collapses, moisture was a major cause. If it barely changes, tune the printer before blaming storage.

Do not stop at one dry cycle

A dryer diagnoses the problem. Dry storage prevents the problem from coming back. Once a spool behaves again, put it in a labeled dry box with a hygrometer or print from a dryer when the material is especially sensitive.
