Drying and storage are different jobs

Active dryers remove moisture from filament. Dry boxes slow moisture from coming back. A wet spool inside a sealed box is still a wet spool; a freshly dried spool left open on a humid shelf is a temporary fix. Treat the workflow as dry, measure, store, then print-through when the material demands it.

Use material to decide how serious the setup needs to be

PLA is forgiving, PETG is the first material where humidity can mimic slicer problems, TPU can get inconsistent fast, and nylon needs a real plan. If your bench mostly prints PLA, a budget dryer plus basic storage is enough. If PETG, TPU, or nylon are always open, a multi-spool dryer and labeled dry boxes become the workflow rather than a luxury.

The room matters as much as the spool

A basement or garage can change behavior across seasons. When the same slicer profile works in winter and fails in summer, the room is part of the diagnosis. Add a hygrometer where the printer actually lives, not only inside a box, and keep notes next to material changes.

A good starter stack

For one printer: buy one active dryer, a few sealed storage boxes, and fresh desiccant. For multiple materials: move to a multi-spool dryer, keep priority materials in dedicated dry boxes, and print-through from the dryer or box for PETG, TPU, and nylon when possible.
